Dry skin around nails can make the hands look very ugly. Not to mention how discomforting and painful it can be in certain cases. Read the following article for tips on preventing this condition as well as some effective home remedies to cure the same...
Dry skin around nails can result from a variety of reasons, ranging from cold and dry weather to the skin coming in contact with chemicals or an injury caused by hangnails! Whatever might be the reason behind it, the point is that it looks ugly and gives a person a very ungroomed look. That's why, preventing and treating this condition is very important.

Nail Trimming and Filing
Cut your nails regularly and keep the cuticles well-groomed. Before trimming your nails, soak your fingers in warm water for about ten minutes. This will soften them, making it easier to cut them in whatever shape you desire. Ideally, people who suffer from this problem, should keep their nails shorter. Once the nails are cut, follow this up by trimming dead skin around your nails, by using cuticle clippers. However, take care that you do not over trim and take out the necessary cuticle, as it is required to prevent any kind of infection from developing.

Use a nail filer and smoothen out the corners of your nail, as rough corners can injure the surrounding skin and make it dry and infected. Finally, take an orange stick and push back the skin on the nails. This will keep the cuticles in place and prevent any kind of skin problems from occurring around the nail, because of it.

Moisturizing
To prevent dry skin on your hands, fingers and around the nails, always make it a point to keep them moisturized, by applying a hand lotion, twice a day, once in the morning and once before going to bed. Massage your hands thoroughly with it. For extra dryness around the nails, follow this up by applying a good quality cuticle oil, on the skin around your nails.

Certain Precautions
As dry cracked skin around nails might develop due to the skin coming in contact with some harsh chemicals in washing powder, soap or detergent, so to avoid this, the next time you undertake any household work which involves using any of these, wear rubber gloves. You can easily find these in any of the hardware stores. It could also result from some chemicals in cosmetics like nail polishes, nail base, nail polish remover, etc. that you are using. So, buy only good quality, branded stuff and do not apply any cheap cosmetics on your nails, if you want to avoid dryness around nails. Sometimes, hangnails, the extra skin around the cuticle, could result if the person is habituated to biting nails. So, this should be completely avoided, as when hangnails come in contact with anything, like even the clothes that we wear, and are torn accidentally, they can lead to immense pain. So cut the hangnails and afterwards apply an antibacterial lotion on top of them as well as bandage them , to prevent any infection.

Effective Home Remedies
Go in for regular manicures. If this seems a waste of time or money to you, get a pair of medical gloves and Vaseline. Once a week, apply Vaseline on your fingers and hands, giving special attention to the dry area around the nails. Apply Vaseline in good quantity, wear the gloves and go off to sleep. Leave the Vaseline overnight as it will give your skin an opportunity to absorb it. This will help moisturize the skin around your nails, thus preventing any kind of dryness to develop in the future. Another effective home remedy is soaking the nails in a solution made from water and olive oil in equal quantities, for about fifteen minutes, every night before sleeping. This should take care of the dry skin.

Besides the ones mentioned above, other ways to prevent dry skin around nails are, applying shea butter, almond oil or vitamin E oil on the affected skin. After following all these precautions and home remedies, if the dryness around nails remains and if it bleeds, the reason could be that the hangnails have become infected. Infected cuticles are almost always filled with pus. If this is the case, a doctor should be contacted immediately, reason being that if urgent treatment is not sought, this infection can spread to the entire nail and can even damage it, in some cases.

More and more people have started to opt for laser technology to treat the problem of nail fungus. Know about this treatment procedure from the following article.
It is always considered a good practice to present a short context about a subject to be spoken about. So, in this case, I would be taking you through some basic and must-know things about nail fungus. Well, nail fungus occurs when one or more nails are infected by fungi. The earliest sign of the infection is a white or yellow spot that appears under the tip of the fingernail or toenail. Over time, as the infection spreads it gets deep down into the affected nail and gives rise to a number of unsightly symptoms. These may include thickening of the nails and loss of luster or shine. Nails may become brittle or crumbly and also, distorted in shape. In a nail fungus, it is easy to notice the accumulation of debris under the infected nail. Coming to the treatment, this problem is not an easy one to treat and do away with. There remains a chance of recurrence. The treatment involves using oral antifungal medication, antifungal lacquer, topical medications or surgery. Apart from th is, the problem can be treated with laser as well.

Treatment of Nail Fungus With the Help of Laser

As the name suggests, the treatment makes use of a laser. This is a specially designed laser that is shined through the infected nail. Doing this, the fungus that has gotten itself embedded in the nail bed and nail plate, vaporizes. The advantage of this kind of treatment is the frequency of the laser beam which is tuned in such a way that it affects only the cells which are responsible for the infection. This means that the treatment has no effect on the healthy tissues. Cuts, burns or any kind of discomfort are ruled out in this procedure.

Speaking about the timeline of the nail fungus treatment, it hardly takes 10 minutes if it is a big toe that has been infected. In case of multiple infections, it may take a little longer. There is no requirement for any hospital stay and patients can walk out as they walked in, before the treatment.

Aftercare

The efficacy of the laser treatment has been shown in about 88% of treated patients and in most cases, the fungus causing the infection, was completely eliminated. It takes about 6-9 months for a nail to replace itself. And within the first 3 months, patients can notice healthy growth of their nails. It has been observed that there have been no reported cases of any adverse side effects of this treatment till date. Medications which are involved in the treatment are associated with side effects on the liver and kidneys.

Speaking of the cost of the laser treatment, it is not currently covered as a health insurance benefit. This is because the treatment is considered as an aesthetic one by most companies. However, the initial foot consultation may be provided without any costs. Usually, the cost comes up to a range of $600-$1200.

Cute French manicure designs have always been in vogue. They are a really nice option for those elegant yet common traditional French manicures.
Women hanker a lot for those beautifully groomed long fingernails. In my opinion there is no greater method to make them more attractive than getting a French manicure done. This manicure is a classic and sophisticated form of manicure and one of the most elegant types of nail art.

With French manicure, the nails look beautiful and well-groomed, which plays a huge role in establishing the personality of a woman. Traditional French manicure has a light pink (or nude) base nail coat and stark white polish on the nail tips. The latest manicure designs are suitable for all occasions from a formal dinner night to a dazzling cocktail party. They look really attractive and they are also really easy to do by the DIY method too.

Unique French Manicure Designs

One of the biggest advantages of having a French manicure is the escape from the 'ordeal' of picking the perfect color shade for each evening. They look trendy with their basic light pink and bright white combination and suit every attire and every occasion. Today, the classic French manicure is modified with use of some trendy artistic designs, patterns, colors and styles. They are now transformed into stylish French nails with numerous additions in their basic texture.

Reverse French Manicure
One of the unusual and unique designs is the 'reverse French manicure design'. This manicure brings a great relief for girls who are yearning for a stunning color shade, rather than the lily white tips. If you want the reverse French manicure, first cover the nails with a base coat of any opaque color shade. Once it is dried completely, apply a half moon nail tip with a darker color shade than the base coat. For instance, if you are using the white nail color as the base, then opt for black, bright red or silver color for the tips. Once the tips are dry, seal both the layers with a nice top coat.

Marbled French Manicure
This French manicure design requires a bit of a skill to get those swift brush movements. You can apply this design on the regular French manicured nails as well. All that you need is a few interestingly contrasting nail polish colors. For instance, red, green, yellow, white, silver and blue or pink, yellow and red, etc. The choice is yours. Now, apply a few dots (4 to 5 each) of all the nail polish colors on the nail tips in a random manner. There is no rule for this application, just do it freely. Now, to get the marbled effect, drag a striper brush over the color dots and move it in a soft swirling motion!

Diagonal French Manicure
This design is great for teenagers. When done with sober and formal colors, it can also be a nice design for the wedding nails too! All you need to do is to create a diagonal line near the nail tips with help of a strip tape. The area above this line will serve as the tip of your nails. Now coat this virtual tip with an opaque color shade and the remaining nail with a sheer nail polish! Making this design is really very easy! To make it more attractive, you can create marbled manicure on the diagonal tip of your nails too! Once you learn how to manicure your fingernails at home, then modifying the base design and developing your own style is not that hard.

Chevron French Manicure
This design doesn't require a lot of modification. Chevron design emphasizes on adding angles to the regular half moon tips. The sharp edge which is formed in the middle of the nail tip, boasts a really elegant and utterly feminine nail art design. The nail tips have a sharp or slightly curvy (petal-like) shape with a point in the middle. You can decorate this middle point with an artificial stone or a simple dot of a contrasting nail polish. Chevron manicure can also be performed with reverse French manicure by using the desired color combination.

Modified French Manicure
This is the latest invention as far as French manicure is concerned. This design is all about an attractive change in the original French manicure. It emphasizes on having the same stark white, half moon tips, with a small curve at the base of the nail, which looks stunning and unique! All you need to do is to create a small curve at the base of the nail (with the same color that you intend to use on the tips) and the regular French manicure tip. When both these curves get completely dry, then color the remaining nail with a contrasting shed of nail polish! This look is really unique and you can do a lot of color variations with this design as well!

Well all said and done, now all you need to do is to learn how to do French manicure at home and then get trendy with some of the above mentioned designs. You can also add glitter on the regular white tips, to give your nails a really trendy look. So, what are you waiting for? Have fun!

The condition of dry cuticles, more than being a health concern, is a cosmetic worry for most people, especially women.
The worst time of the year which makes the nails go dry and cracked is winter. This is the time when you must take utmost care of your nails, if you wish to keep them looking beautiful and healthy. The condition of dry cuticles, not only indicates the effects of the harsh winter, but it may also be a sign of poor health. And in fact, most people with poor health always have nail problems of some kind or the other. If your cuticles are going dry due to environmental conditions, then following a few self-care measures is good enough to deal with the problem. However, if there is any underlying medical condition as an offender, then medical treatment cannot be evaded.

How to Treat Dry Cuticles at Home

You can always go for medical preparations to take care of the problem, however, if using some simple home remedies does the trick, then why shell out money.
  • If you love long nails, then you may have to give it up, if you have this condition. The thumb rule is, the shorter the nails, the lesser the problems
  • One of the causes of dry cuticles is lack of moisture. Due to obvious reasons, nails do not have the ability to hold moisture. One effective home remedy is to soak your hands in warm water mixed with apple cider vinegar. Soak for about 10 minutes, and once you are done, dry them properly, and apply a moisturizer. For better results, it is a good idea to file back the dry cuticles, before you soak your hands
  • Keep your nails from getting exposed to water for prolonged period, or other conditions which would make them moist. This is due to the fact that moist conditions may give rise infected cuticles, which might make the condition worse
  • Most people have benefited from using concentrated essential orange oil to manage the problem
  • Make a mix of tea tree and aloe oil, and apply it onto the affected area. The tea tree oil would help prevent any further damage, and the other oil would keep the nails moisturized.
  • Never bother hangnails by breaking them or tearing them off. Doing this would be a direct invitation to bacterial infection. Simply clip the dry part of the hangnail and apply an over-the-counter antibiotic
  • The less you make use of nail cosmetics like sculptured nails, fingernail polishes, or nail hardeners, the lesser would be problems like dry cuticles
  • As I have mentioned, nails are one of the prime indicators of the health of an individual. So, a diet that is balanced would definitely help in preventing such problems from the inside. Include foods rich in vitamin C, antioxidants, and other nutrients
The condition of dry cuticles should not be taken as only a cosmetic issue, as it tells you much more about your health. If after using all such remedies, the condition does not resolve, then you may want to visit a doctor. You never know what the real underlying cause might be. So the sooner you detect it, the better it is, not only for your nails, but your overall health as well.

The leading causes of toenails falling off are injury, onychomadesis, onychia and fungal infection. Home treatment for falling toenails depends on the causes of this nail problem. So, you need to identify the root causes for toenail separation first, and act accordingly.
Caring for nails is a necessity, rather than being a part of the beauty regime. But, nail problems do appear, no matter how much we care for them. Some of the common nail disorders are discoloration, abnormal thickening, crumbling, layering, splitting, ingrown nail, nail fungus, nail pits and nail falling off amongst others. Coming to toenail separation, several factors are responsible for this unsightly nail problem, which we will discuss in this article.

Causes of Falling Toenails

For everyone, seeing the toenails falling away is definitely a subject to worry about. But, why do toenails fall off? While injury or trauma to the toe is an obvious cause for nail loosening and detachment, there are other probable reasons for separation of toenail from the nail bed. One of the causes is onychoptosis, which refers to gradual shedding of fingernails and toenails due to underlying health condition, or medication effects. Affecting one or more nails at a time, part of the nails or whole nails shed periodically. Explained below are other causes for toenail separation from the nail bed.

Injury and Trauma
Physical trauma to the toes is a leading cause of a toenail falling off from the nail bed. Such cases are usually accompanied with bruising and bleeding consequences. While anyone can face this painful nail condition, sportspersons who engage in running most of the time are more susceptible to toenail separation due to injury than others. Also, the risks are higher for those, who wear tight shoes.

Onychomadesis
While the actual causes of onychomadesis are not identified, it is considered a referred sign of some systemic illnesses. In some, It develops as an adverse reaction to certain medications. The actual affected site is the nail matrix, which no longer functions normally. Whatever the causal factor, the common symptom of this nail disorder is gradual shedding of the toenail, starting from the proximal end and progressing towards the free end, resulting in separation of the nail plate.

Onychia
This nail disorder affects both children and adults. It is characterized by inflammation of the tissues of the nail bed, and those adjacent to the toenail plate. What happens is, pathogenic microbes (bacteria, virus, fungi) make their way in these tissues through minor cuts and injuries. Over time, the activity of microbes leads to formation of pus around the nail plate, and at times, underneath the plate. As a consequence, the affected toenail sheds and gets separated from the nail bed.

Fungal Infection
One of the probable causes of toenails falling off is fungal infection. Toenail infection is caused by a group of fungus called dermatophytes, and is medically known as onychomycosis. It is one of the most frequently occurring nail disorders, and many people seek medical help for the same. Infection begins with whitish or yellowish coloration of the affected nail. Overtime, it thickens with unwanted debris getting accumulated on the sides and underneath the toenail plate.

When toenail fungus is left untreated, you will notice crumbling of the edges and layering of the nails. Very often, the skin surrounding the infected nails become inflamed, resulting in painful symptoms. Moreover, the accumulated debris leads to lifting of the affected nail plate from its bed, a condition called onycholysis. In such a case, toenail is vulnerable to falling off on its own. Even bumping of the toenail to a hard object, or mild trauma, will cause it to fall off. Read more on toenails falling off for no reason.

How to Deal with Falling Toenails?

Nothing can be more disheartening than having a toenail that is on the verge of falling off from the nail bed, especially if it is summertime, and you have already shopped floral printed sandals for beach walks. If toenail falls off due to injury, practice first aid tips properly to stop bleeding. In case, part of the nail is affected, cut the affected portion. Complete removal is advisable, if the whole nail plate is affected due to injury. Always keep the injured site clean, to promote quick healing and minimize infection risks.

As for toenail falling off due to fungal infection, treatment is based on preventing further spreading of fungus, while treating the infection symptoms. Applying tea tree oil, vinegar and over-the-counter antifungal creams helps in curing nail fungus. Proper nail care is a must to restore normal health of the toenails. Avoid going barefoot in public places like gyms and swimming pools. In case of severe infection, which do not improve even after adopting home treatment options, consult a podiatrist.

Wearing comfortable and well-fitting footwear is a simple tip to reduce pressure on the toes. Putting on very tight shoes puts pressure on the toenails, and also creates a favorable environmental for fungal infection. Thus, select shoes that give space to the toenails. Fortunately, the lost toenail will grow back within a matter of few weeks or months. But, there is no trick for quick replacement of fallen toenail. The only solution is following useful tips to maintain healthy nails and avoid further problems, while new toenails replace the lost ones.

A few tips on foot fungus home remedy have been presented in this article to help you deal with the condition at home.
When we speak of foot fungus, we generally refer to what is known as athlete's foot. It is the most common fungal infection that may affect different parts of the foot. Another name for it in clinical terms is tinea pedis. This infection, in most cases, affects the moist parts between the toes.

How to Manage Foot Fungus At Home

Normally, tinea pedis treatment involves the use of over-the-counter antifungal medications, for mild cases. However, if they don't, then prescription-strength medicines are recommended at the doctor's.

Home Remedy What To Do
Remedy #1 Vinegar has been known to be a popular, natural foot fungus cure since ages. All you have to do is mix vinegar and water by equal parts, and soak in the affected foot at least for 15 minutes. For best results, continue doing this for 2 weeks.
Remedy #2 Also, you can soak in your foot for sometime in warm water, mixed with Epsom salt. Even this is helpful for fungal infection.
Remedy #3 Another effective remedy is tea tree oil. This substance has antifungal properties thus, providing for a natural solution to deal with the condition. It has to be applied directly to the infected foot, three times a day. It is recommended to use this oil at least for 2 weeks, even after the infection has gone. This would help to reduce the chance of any recurrence.
Remedy #4 Place a few cinnamon sticks in a pot filled with water. Bring the water to a boil, and let it cool down. Pour the water in a large vessel and soak in your feet.
Remedy #5 Listerine is known as an effective mouthwash, but very few are aware of its use to treat foot fungus. Before going to bed, pour Listerine over the infected foot. Wait for sometime before rinsing off. Regular use of this antiseptic mouthwash, would speed up the recovery.
Remedy #6 Another remedy is the regular use of baking soda. Sprinkle some over your feet everyday, and some on your shoes too. This stuff helps in keeping things dry thus, discouraging fungal growth.
Remedy #7 Grapefruit seeds extract has also shown its benefits in treating the problem. This extract is antifungal in nature. Take a few drops of it on your palm and rub it on the feet. Do this twice or thrice daily.

Type 1 One early symptom of the condition is a feeling of intense itching, burning and stinging that occurs between the toes. The same may also felt on the soles.
Type 2 There might develop blisters, which may itch.
Type 3 The affected areas, which may be the soles and the area between the toes, may develop cracked or peeling skin.
Type 4 The above symptoms may be accompanied by excessive dryness on the infected areas.
Type 5 There are cases, when this infection may spread to the toenails. And when it does, the nails become discolored, thick and crumbly.

Causes

Dermatophytes are known to be a group of mold-like fungi. They are normal inhabitants of our skin. They cause no harm until the skin remains clean and dry. However, if they get the scope to thrive in warm, and damp environment, their growth becomes unchecked. This is why people who constantly wear tight shoes, commonly suffer from fungal foot infection.

To conclude, the above methods work well for mild conditions. But if they don't, then the problem might be more than just being mild. So show yourself to the doctor and follow his recommendations well.

Do you long for those elegant looking French nails? If yes, read the following article for some very easy French nail tips which will help you to do them at home.
French nails are classy and make the woman who has them, look well-groomed. Although many women these days like to show off flashy nails, but if you ask my choice, I prefer the natural look which only a French manicure can give. Although with time, even the designs have undergone a sea change with many salons offering a combination of the natural looking nails, with some innovative designs on them. The same french manicure with creative designs which the salons offer, can be conducted at home too. Just follow the below suggested tips.

How to do French Nails

Before learning to do French nails, it is very important to understand what exactly is a French manicure. A French manicure refers to a style of doing nails in which white nail paint is applied on the tips of the nails, while the rest of the nails are painted with a natural looking pink polish or a light beige polish. In order to do French manicure at home, you will need to buy the French manicure kits that are available in the market. These kits generally contain all the things that you would need, such as base and top coat, natural nail polish, white nail polish and tip guide strips. Here is a step wise guide for applying French nails.

Step 1
With a nail polish remover, get rid of any previous polish that you may have on your nails. Also, cut your nails, giving them an appropriate shape.

Step 2
Wash your hands and nails with soap and let them dry. Once they are dry, apply the base coat on all the nails. Remember to keep the base coat very thin.

Step 3
Apply the tip guide to the lower part of your nails. Now paint each nail tip using the white polish. Use outward strokes, i.e from the tip guide to nail end, while polishing. Let the tips become dry. Later, remove the tip guides from all the nails.

Step 4
Now take the natural nail polish, and apply its two coats on the lower part of the nail. Let the polish dry.

Step 5
In the end, apply the top coat nail polish. Here's the most useful tip - apply the upper coat on the French nails every night, before going to bed, to make them long-lasting.

These are a few tips which will help you to get a French manicure sitting at home. French nails give a woman a very sophisticated and elegant look. However, if you want to spice things up a little bit, or if you feel that they are too dull for your choice, then I would suggest that instead of using the white and neutral color combination, you can paint your nails with creative color combination, such as white and red or blue and silver. One of the most offbeat designs is to use dark color combination such as red and purple or black and yellow on your nails. As you can see French nails can be both sugar and spice, conservative and revolutionary, so do them in whichever way they bring out your personality.

While the presence of white spots on nails is always not a severe condition, treating it and knowing about its cases may help evade bigger problems in the future.
Each one of us have suffered from occasional white spots on fingernails or toenails. The discoloration appears at the cuticle and moves outwards slowly as the nail grows. The most common cause of spots on nails is nail fungi, which is commonly found in dust, air and soil. If you are in the habit of covering your nails with nail polish all the time, lack of oxygen to the toenail can give rise to toenail fungus. At the same time, there are a number of myths which surround the sudden appearance of these spots. Having said that, let's see what is their cause.

Deficiency
Vitamin deficiency as well as mineral deficiency can cause white spots on toenails as well as fingernails. It is also seen that many women suffer from calcium deficiency, which is one of the cause of white spots. Moreover, if your diet is not rich in zinc, it can also give rise to white spots. If along with white spots, you also notice hair fall and slow immune system, you know what is it that is causing the problem.

Infection
Underlying infection is often also a cause of this problem. Most of us keep our feet covered in shoes all the time, hence do not even know that there is an infection, which is eating up into the nails. When the fungus gets under the nail and starts to grow, a whitish area may appear. There are three types of fungal infection, which can affect the toenails, namely yeast, molds and dermatophytes. It often appears somewhere other than the cuticle, more so at the other end, i.e. the tip of the nail. It is often seen, that people whose feet perspire a lot are often prone to the condition. If the discoloration is growing, it can cause the nail to become thicker or thinner, the nail may come apart, start flaking or splitting.

Injury
Often we are so busy with our daily schedule, that we simply choose to ignore an injury or do not even realize that we have had an injury. In some cases, the injury may also be caused, while cutting the nails. However, if you do notice white spots on the nails you may want to check out if it is caused due to an injury. The white spots may not turn up immediately after the injury, it may take a few days to weeks before you actually notice the spots.

Allergy
Allergies to certain products can also cause white spots. The allergic reaction can be triggered off, due to products such as nail polish, nail hardener or even nail polish remover. In case you have changed any of the just mentioned products, then you know what are the steps you will have to undertake to get rid of the problem.

There are a number of traditional home remedies, natural healing products as well as over-the-counter treatments available to treat the condition. There are topical and oral medication, which is often used for treating the condition. However, it is best to speak to your health care professional and find out the main cause of the problem. In case white spots are caused due to any deficiency, it is better to treat it on time. The doctor will be in a better position to know the extent of the damage caused by an infection. You may be given prescription drugs to deal with the problem.

Although most of the white spots often go away on their own, you will have to keep a watch on them. Making nail care a habit will prevent the further occurrence of these spots. If you are of the opinion that the spots refuse to go away, then it can be a serious condition and it is better to get in touch with your doctor to eradicate the problem from the root itself.

Most of the men take manicure as something which is meant for women. They think that manicure is done to beautify hands, and thus is obviously for women. Such men are surely not aware of the health benefits of manicure. If you are one among such men, you should consider reading the present article. You would come to know about some of the important benefits of manicure for men.

Manicure Benefits
Men should consider doing manicure as they may derive a number of health and beauty benefits from it. Manicure, when done on regular basis, keep the nails clean healthy, and free from micro-organisms like bacteria and fungus. Thus, it protects the nails from several diseases. Some of them are fungal infections, pale nails, ingrown nails and hard or brittle nails. Secondly, manicure promotes growth and strength of nails. Thirdly, it helps keeping the nails and hands shiny and healthy. In this manner, manicure completely foreclose the necessity of using artificial nails, which can damage your fingernails over time. Fourthly, manicure makes hands aesthetically pleasing. Lastly, it is an amazing way of relaxing and unwinding. The hand massage done during manicure eases stress and produces a long-lasting positive effect.

Procedure
For performing self manicure, you will need cotton pads, orange wood stick, soft nail brush, metal nail filer, nail cutter and warm water in a bowl. Cut the overgrown nails with the nail cutter. File the nails in shape with the metal filer. Ideally, a man's nail should be in a round shape with the white nail ¼ inch beyond the fingertip. Apply a small amount of olive oil or cuticle serum to each nail. Fill a bowl with warm water. Add a dollop of a mild shampoo and 5 - 6 drops of rose water. Mix all the ingredients well. Lather will be formed in the process. Soak your hands into this mixture. Do make sure that the water temperature is tolerable to you. Keep the hands soaked for 10 - 15 minutes.

The warm water will soften the cuticles. During the soaking period, gently massage your hands. Brush the nails and the skin around it with the nail brush. This will get the blood flow through your fingers. Take a pumice stone and rub it on the fingers, both on the inner and upper side. A pumice stone gently removes the dead skin from the fingers. When the cuticles have become soft, dab some amount of cuticle remover on the nail base. This will ease the pushing back of the cuticles. Hold the orange stick at some angle and push the dry skin of the cuticles towards the nail base. Also, push back the cuticles along the sides of your nails. Perform pushing of the cuticle steps as gently as possible.

If dead skin chips are present, wipe them away with a cotton pad. Do not use a cotton ball as it may leave streaks behind. Buff the nails in one direction. Do not rub them as rubbing may heat up the nails. The purpose is to improve blood circulation through the nails. Now, you know all the basic steps to how to manicure fingernails. If you wish, you may apply a transparent nail polish on your nails. It will give your nails a healthy shine. In some beauty salons, after the application of transparent nail polish, a white colored pain is applied on the nail tip. Such a manicure is called french manicure.

Do try homemade manicure once on your fingers. You would love the result. If possible, try to manicure your fingers twice a month.

Easy Nail Art Design Ideas

Nature Designs
If you are intrigued by nature and want to have a piece of it painted on your nails as well, you could choose a nail art design that is dedicated to nature. To give it an extremely realistic feel, you may use the nail polish colors such as green, yellow and blue as primary hues. For a safe start, you may use a white nail polish and paint your nails completely. After giving some time to the white shade to dry, you may move on to using the yellow nail polish only to paint the tips or the upper crest of the nail. After the color dries, you may take a thin brush and add two leaves at the bottom of the nail bud with a dark shade of green. This will create an impression of the sun being the light and life contributor to plants. Another design that you may try, is to make a simple flower with a shade of red being the background. Make a flower with yellow petals and light green leaves. This design would look stunning!

Black and White
Have a dark and bright shade console your nails... the art-y way! This is indeed an easy nail design, absolutely meant for conducting it at home. For a head start, paint your nail bed with the color black. Let the first coat of the nail paint dry out completely and only then top it up with another one. After the two-coat application is done; with a white nail polish, paint the rising crest of the nail. Horizontal strokes of the nail brush over the crest will give a neat and well-trimmed finish. A look at your nails, and one would know as to where the attitude comes from!

Geometrical Designs
You may bring back memories of school and rehearse your geometry section once again. If you are keen not to stick on nature designs, and making flowers is not your forte, you better switch to designing some shapes that amalgamate your geometrical endeavors. You may use a light-colored nail polish to paint your nails completely. Let it dry. With a dark nail polish of your choice, you are free to make Frisbee designs or little circles, triangles and squares. You may smear some sparkle on the nail for the purpose of highlighting the design.

Polka Dots
Another simple design is to paint your nails with a dark shade of nail color and make a dotted design over the coat. As it goes for all nail design instructions, it is mandatory, that you keep patience and let the color dry. After it has dried, take a pencil or a tiny-thin stick and dip it into a light nail enamel shade. Spot your nails with the colored tip of the stick. Now, doesn't this call for a colorful 'dipstick'!

Designs with Gems
You may also choose to apply tiny and petite stickers on the nail. All you need out here is tweezers, cotton balls, stickers and gems. Hold the sticker or the gem/bead with the tweezers, dip the side of the bead that you have to stick into the glue bottle, and carefully place the gem or the sticker on the desired place. Be very careful when you are doing this. You may mess the entire nail design if you are not accurate, and if your hand is not rock-steady. Try doing this several times on a piece of paper, till you perfect the art. It is only then that you would be able to make a design that you would cherish.

The Revolutionary Magnetic Nail Art
A new trend making waves in the world of nail art is the magnetic nail art. The magnetic nail polish consists grainy metal particles. The cap of your magnetic nail varnish has an affixed magnet. As soon as you apply the nail varnish, you must hold the magnetic cap and loom it over the nail varnish. However, make sure that you loom the magnet over the nail for 10 to 15 seconds. You would observe a pattern being formed, as the magnet superficially reacts with the metal particles. For a better hold of the nail polish and the design, complete the entire procedure for each nail. Your nail varnish has to be fresh and wet for the magnet to work. Apply a protecting top coat after the nails have dried and the pattern has been set.

After Completing the Nail Art Design ...
  • Let the nails dry thoroughly. Don't be in a hurry and spoil the effort that you have put in.
  • Ensure that you apply a transparent nail shade as top coat to provide the nail with a protective cover, thus preventing the nails from chipping.
So with these easy nail designs to do at home, you are sure to have enviable nails. Nail art is not an impossible task if you have the right attitude to carry it off well. A pinch of panache sprinkled, won't do much harm either; what do you think?

White spots on the nails can develop mainly due to minor injury to the base of the nail or infection. The spots generally disappear on their own within a few days. Know what causes them by reading this article.
Leukonychia punctata is the medical term used to refer to the condition, where white spots develop on the nails. It is one of the several types of leukonychia, which is the term used to describe white discoloration of nails. The other types of leukonychia are, leukonychia totalis, leukonychia partialis and leukonychia striata. In leukonychia totalis, the entire nail becomes white, while eukonychia partialis refers to whitening of a part of the nail. On the other hand, leukonychia striata is the condition, where white or discolored bands appear on the nail. Out of all these types, leukonychia punctata, i.e. white spots on the nails is the most common form of leukonychia, which can be more commonly observed in young people and women.

Leukonychia
These white spots are still a mystery, and has remained surrounded by several myths, one of them being that, calcium deficiency is the main cause for the development of such spots. However, most of the time, such spots actually develop due to minor trauma or injury to the matrix or the base of the nail. This may be the reason why it is more commonly found among people who have the habit of nail biting and picking. However, the white spots do not appear immediately after a minor nail injury. They usually take time to develop and most of the time, people forget about the injury by the time these spots appear.

Many also attribute these white spots to the trapped air bubbles in the nail plate. Defective keratinization, which is the process of nail formation, can be another reason for getting those white spots. Sometimes, allergy to nail polish, remover or nail hardener, as well as a bad or aggressively done manicure can also cause white spots on the nail. Occasionally, mild infection, caused by bacteria or nail fungus can also result in the development of white spots on the nails. Apart from these, some other causes are, zinc deficiency (if the spots persist for a long time and appear in several nails) and intake of certain drugs. Most of the time, the spots disappear on their own within a few days. At the most, such spots can take eight weeks to disappear or grow out completely.

How to Get Rid of Leukonychia?
If there are only a few white spots and that too of very small size, then it is better to wait for some time and let them grow out on their own. When they grow past the end of the finger, just cut them off. In the meantime, regularly moisturize the fingers along with the nails. You can use vitamin E oil to nourish and moisturize the nails, as well as the skin around the nails. Also try to avoid aggressive manicure, and cutting or pushing the cuticles too harshly. Instead, try to go slow while manicuring the nails. At the same time, eat a healthy diet, rich in vitamins and minerals including, zinc to get rid of these white spots.

A few white spots on the fingernails found occasionally is not a major concern. However, if the whole nail becomes partially or completely white, then consider visiting a dermatologist. You can also consult a dermatologist, if you observe a large number of white spots on nearly all of the nails, for a prolonged time period. This can help to find out whether these white spots are caused by infection, nutritional deficiency or by minor injury. Proper nail care can help to reduce the number and frequency of these spots.

Get tips on cuticle care at home and have healthy and great looking nails. Stay away from cuticle infection and other problems by following these tips. Read on...
Cuticles are folds of skin at the base of your nails. Peeling cuticles is a common problem for people having dry skin. These give an unsightly look to your nails when they overgrow. The loose ends, in such case, often rest at the base of your nails. Overgrown cuticles are also known to interfere with the natural growth of your nails. Damaged cuticles can be a common cause of nail infection at this site. Taking proper care of these cuticles is essential not only for good looking finger nails and toe nails, but mainly for having problem free nails. But, how do you care for these delicate cuticles which form an important part of the nails? Here's all about cuticle care at home, a regime that you can follow to have healthy cuticles and hence, great looking nails.

Keep them Clean

To start with the cuticle care regime, that one needs to follow, make sure your nails are clean. You can go for a pedicure or manicure twice a month. Process of the same is quite simple and you can do it yourself by investing some time which will ensure that your nails stay healthy. While cleaning your nails make sure that the nail polish is completely off the nails. Many women have a habit of continuously reapplying nail polish. Avoid this, and let your nails breath free for some days between the coats.

Removing Excess Cuticles

Once the nails are clean or while you are doing manicure or pedicure at home, cutting the extra cuticle growth is important. Let me tell you that you must do the same carefully. Cutting it with the right tool, and very carefully, is an important step. Work slowly on the cuticle. First apply a cuticle cream and place cotton balls over each nail. Let it stay on for sometime. This will loosen and soften the dry cuticle. Now you can use cuticle clippers, orange stick, cuticle trimmer or any such cuticle remover tool to get off the extra growth. Remember to use metal tools only if required, as these might damage the delicate nail cuticle and also lead to cuticle infection. Just try to loosen the cuticle with a cuticle remover tool and you can see extra cuticle coming off. Also, do not remove it forcefully. Make sure you only remove the 'excess growth'.

Moisturize them Daily

Moisturizing the cuticles daily will help you stay away from the problem of peeling and dry cuticles. Applying a cream specially formulated for moisturizing your cuticles is the important part. Go for cuticle creams containing natural oils. You can also choose to apply a commercial oil or massage them with natural oils like almond and olive oil.

Protect Them

One of the important parts is protecting them. Try using rubber gloves while you do household work like cleaning utensils, if possible, so as to avoid direct contact with strong detergents which can dry out the cuticles. Do not bite you nails or use them as tools to open cans and packages. Make sure you shop for cuticle care products after checking the brand and quality. Low-grade products which claim to keep your cuticles healthy can instead damage them.

Following the aforementioned nail care tips regularly will ensure that you have healthy toenails and fingernails. Include the four easy tips in your grooming routine and keep your nails looking great. All the best!

Though these designs may seem like they are meant for large spaces, each design can be modified to fit within a limited space as well. What you should extract from these ideas is methods of furniture placement, use of color, and lighting techniques (which will depend on the mood and requirement of a given space within the salon). Combined together, these techniques will help you create a gorgeous, comfortable, and functional space.

Reception and Waiting Area

Beauty Salon - Waiting Area
Go for a sleek look with interesting lighting fixtures to add a spark to your reception. You may also use this area for retail and to showcase products that your salon sells. Adding a shock of color while retaining the neutrality of the zone will give the reception a vibrant touch without overpowering it.

Hair Washing Area

Beauty Salon - Hair Washing Station
Here, the waiting area is just a few feet away from the hair washing station, which has been suitably covered simply by the layout of the space. This shows that you don't really need physical barriers to demarcate zones in your salon. You can do so by simply using color or equipment. Also note how the partition has been wisely used to store products.

Hair Cutting/Dressing or Makeup Area

Beauty Salon - Hair Cutting Zone
An uncluttered hairdressing area is every client as well as salon owner's dream, and this can be achieved by using portable trays to keep your supplies while keeping this zone clear. Doing so allows you to provide more space for more clients. The lighting that has been used in this space is also something worth noticing. Multiple sleek light fixtures not only brighten up the space, they also impart that contemporary feel to your salon that most clients can relate to.

Manicure/Pedicure Zone

Beauty Salon - Manicure and Pedicure Zone
A relaxing mani-pedi station is exactly what any salon needs. With lighting enough just for the technician to do her/his job properly, you can create a calm zone that your clients will look forward to retreating to.

Massage/Body Hair Removal/Facial Zone

Beauty Salon - Massage Center
Use your limited space to provide multiple services in a single area. A good massage table can be used for facials, massages, and hair removal too. Provide a mix of lighting in this space so that you may use it accordingly for the services. For instance, for facials and body hair removal you will require adequate lighting, whereas for a massage you may create a relaxing ambiance by using dim lights.

Designing Tips for a Beauty Salon
The design of your salon will depend on several factors including:
  • The type of salon and the services it offers
  • The clientele - male/female/unisex
  • The available space
  • Your personal taste
Based on these factors, you may design the salon while keeping the following tips in mind.

Plan out the Space
You can either have separate sections with physical barriers in your beauty salon or plan it like an efficiency apartment, wherein there is no physical separation of the various areas. You may do this particularly if the space in the salon is limited. In any case, chalk out different areas on the blueprint. For example, there should be a separate space for hair care, a separate one for hair removal, and a separate one for spas, massages and facials. Barrier or not, there should be designated areas for separate services to avoid chaos.

Utilize the Space Wisely
A beauty salon must have the right blend of style and usability. You should utilize the entire space to its fullest; at the same time, make sure you don't make your salon look cluttered! There should be enough ventilation and adequate lighting so that the entire salon appears fresh at all times. The space between seats in the hair cutting zone should be enough to have two people stand in it. Aisles should be kept clear at all times to let staff and customers walk freely. If the available space is small, use mirrors spanning long walls so that the space looks larger.

Place Fixtures and Sockets Appropriately
You're bound to use a lot of electrical appliances in your salon. Ensure that you have sockets fixed at the appropriate spots, so that you can use your appliances efficiently.

Pick Out the Right Colors
The type of clientele you have will play an important role while choosing the color scheme. Choose neutral or bright colors if it is for both men and women, and try to keep the design contemporary so that it appeals to a larger whole. As shown in the images above, purple is a great color that caters to both genders. Pick a pattern such as stripes to complement the color and keep the remaining color scheme monochromatic so that the color in question (here, purple) bursts through and catches the eye without overpowering the ambiance. Also, remember that as someone who will be spending a lot of time in there, you should be comfortable with how your salon looks and the colors used in it. If the space is limited, go for lighter colors so that it looks larger.

Maintain Adequate Storage Space
Make sure your salon has adequate storage space in order to accommodate all your products, supplies, and equipment. You can have shelves and cabinets built into walls to maximize the utility of space and keep the floor free of them. Sectioning these areas out using sheer curtains is a great idea. If you are using physical barriers to demarcate spaces in the salon, try to use them for storage, which may be open or concealed. Neatly display all the products that you have, and ensure that the shelves are dusted daily to avoid accumulation of dust and dirt.

Keep Comfortable Furniture
Comfort is the number one thing that you should consider while buying your beauty salon furniture - be it the waiting lounge chairs at the reception, chairs used for haircuts, or the massage tables. Make sure that your clients will be comfortable with all the furniture that you have at the salon.

Use Lighting to Create an Ambiance
In any given interior space, lighting plays an important role in making or breaking the ambiance. Moreover, in a commercial space such as a salon, the right amount of lighting is imperative for its function. Use a combination of lighting types so that you can create an ambiance without hampering your work and function. You may use dimmer lighting in the reception and brighter lighting in the work area. Using bright white light enhances the look of a beauty salon. The kind of lighting you choose again depends on the look you're trying to create for your clientele.

Add the Finishing Touches
When people walk into a beauty salon, they should be convinced that they will leave the place looking stunning! It is the ambiance of a salon that has to convince a customer that the place oozes style and beauty. Keep coffee table books and magazines around for people to read while they wait for their appointment. Display pictures of the most fashionable and popular clients that visit you. Make sure that there is continuous air conditioning and the place is always sparkling clean. Keep fresh flowers or indoor potted plants to give it a fresh look. Use items like mildly scented potpourri, scented candles, and other aromatherapy products that will leave a lilting (but not nauseating) fragrance in your salon. You can also include a small water body like a fountain or an artificial waterfall in the reception area for a peaceful environment.

All the ideas and tips given here are small but important things to be kept in mind, and will greatly influence and improve how comfortable and efficient your salon looks.

Not only is nail biting in children harmful for their health, but it is also an annoying habit. This article discusses the factors that trigger the habit and some effective nail biting cures as well.
Studies show that almost 30% to 60% of kids have the habit of nail biting. Along with it, thumb sucking, hair twirling and nose picking are some of the habits that are commonly found in children. A child may be blissfully unaware of this fact. However, it is not the case with parents. Nail biting usually goes away with age. However, many children carry this habit into adulthood. Various studies and their findings just reiterate parents' fear about the habit of nail biting in children. For example according to "Operant Learning Principles Applied to Nail Biting" - a study carried out by Terry M. McClanahan, 28 to 33% children between the age group of 7-10 years, 44% adolescents, 19 to 29% adults and surprisingly, 5% of older adults have the habit of biting their nails. It is thus, a very common problem. In consonance with the findings of McClanahan study, I have seen many adults biting their nails, which may be something that they carried on from their childhood. Let us unders tand why do children bite nails and some cures for them.

Causes
Although a common problem, not much research has been done to determine the causes of nail biting. Although stress relief is most widely believed to be the reason behind this habit, other causes have also been suggested. For instance, some believe that it is genetic in nature, that, children of parents who bite nails or who had the habit in childhood, are more likely to pick this habit as compared to other kids. However, this was opposed to the most widely believed theory that nail biting is a learned or an 'acquired' habit. There are others who have highlighted the correlation between thumb sucking and nail biting. Although these two habits have been found to occur simultaneously in many children, all thumb suckers do not bite their nails. Hence, as of now, anxiety and stress seem to be the reason behind nail biting and this is the theory that's gaining ground. It is also associated with low self-esteem and as a mechanism to relieve pent up emotions or tension. Some psycholo gists also believe that the habit is a reaction to some deep rooted emotional or psychological problems.

Cures
For those who are wondering how to stop nail biting in their kids, here are some remedies that have worked for some parents. Try them:
  • Try to identify if the reason behind your child's habit is stress. In case it is, your aim should be to identify the situations that trigger stress in your child. Did your child start biting his nails after you moved into a new house? Or is it his new school that you think is causing him stress? It is difficult to change the cause of anxiety in such cases. However, talking and reassuring your child about the new environment would be a great help to enable him to deal with the stress.
  • Talk to your child about his habit. Explain to him that nail biting is not good and that it could cause him health problems as well. Also explain the importance of nail care and how to go about it.
  • Distract you child when he bites his nails. This requires you to identify the circumstances when he does so. For example, if your child bites his nail when on a long journey or sitting idle, it could be due to boredom. Give him something to play with and keep him engaged.
  • You could also coat your child's nails with some bitter juice or solution that does not contain any harmful substances that may be dangerous for your child's health. The bitter taste would help your child get out of the habit.
  • This method of treatment works great for older girls. Just tell them how gorgeous their nails would look if they were long and shaped up, with a coat of lustrous pink shade on special occasions.
  • Praise you child for not biting nails. This positive reinforcement will boost his self-esteem. Also reward him occasionally to help him understand the fact that his efforts of giving up the habit are being appreciated. However, do not shower him with too many gifts, as frequent rewarding may have a negative effect on the child.
  • This might sound strange, but sometimes just leaving the habit on its own may work out. It is because in majority of the cases, a child gets rid of this habit as he grows up. This most commonly happens as a child starts going to school due to peer pressure that works great in reinforcing positive habits in us. However, in case the habit does not go with time, you might need to take one of the aforementioned steps.
Nail biting is one of the mild types of self mutilating habits in children. Although in most cases it is limited to just biting off the nails, some children damage the cuticles and also nibble at the skin and flesh around the nail. This may create serious wounds and may also leave an opportunity for bacteria and other germs to enter the body. If nail biting is severe and is also accompanied with other self destructive behavior like tearing one's hair, a pediatrician should be immediately consulted.

Nail biting may have various causes. However, the approach for curing it is only one, and that is through love and patience. It is not difficult to get rid of nail biting in kids through positive reinforcement and persistence, although in most cases the habit goes away with time.
